Example of NOVAD at Work
NOVAD creates team building programs with reflective exercises to ensure that learning is thoughtful, engaging, memorable, and sustainable. The U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Disaster Assistance (ODA) engaged NOVAD to develop and facilitate a team building activity for its top 60 ODA management personnel. The initiative, known as the Leadership Effectiveness Initiative (LEI), became an opportunity to identify areas to improve communication and collaboration and to take action on breaking through silos that existed for five years after a departmental reorganization. The LEI was designed to develop trust and collaboration through actionable assignments that achieved positive changes and results.
The four-day event included executive and management staff from ODA’s six operational units that are located in New York, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and California as well as the Washington, DC headquarters. The event included an experiential learning activity on the Gettysburg Battlefield and an ODA-Specific Leadership Forum that focused on issues raised by participants in a blind survey. Over a 6-month period, NOVAD facilitated small groups that focused on the six key issues. The method used by NOVAD to improve how work is conducted led to organizational improvements, leadership capacity-building and the accomplishment of the objectives of enhanced trust and collaboration.
